Northeast Rally at Stowe,VT
ETC members in the Northeast are urged to bring their car to the Stowe, Vermont car
show on August 8-10th. Stowe is one of the best car shows in New England, with nearly
1,000 cars on display, most from 1965 and earlier. We had a good turnout last year, with
a half dozen old Pontiacs, but would like to double that number this year.

To register, download a registration form from the website above.

Merrill Mundell will collect all the registrations, then mail them in as a block, ordered
by year. Since cars are displayed on Friday and Saturday in the order in which the
registrations are received, all of our Pontiacs will be arranged on the field in ascending
order as a group. They’ll be in the same order for the several miles long parade that
ends the show on Saturday. Cars are grouped by class on Sunday for judging.
To participate, please return your registration form with the $15 fee to: Merrill Mundell,
P.O. Box 866,
Wilmington VT 05363. Registrations must be received by May 15th to be included in the
batch registration process.
This is a great event, and a nice opportunity for club members in the region to get to
know each other and their cars. Mark your calendar today!

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is the premier standard for gasoline performance. six of
the world's top automakers; BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and
Audi recognize that the current EPA minimum detergent requirements do not go far
enough to ensure optimal engine performance.
Since the minimum additive performance standards were first established by the EPA
in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the econcentration level of
detergent additive in their gasoline by up to 50%. As a result, the ability of a vehicle to
maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards have been hampered, leading to engine
deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions and driver satisfaction.

The Old Car Manual Project
First and foremost, the Old Car Manual Project is a library: a central place where
anyone can come to get the information they need. How this happens is by volunteers
scanning their hard-to-find documents into a digital format, so that everyone can have
access to the information in them.
This project is non-profit. Our philosophy is that technical information which is already
in the public domain should be available for free on the web. Donations are cheerfully
accepted.

The National Scenic Byways Program is part of the U.S. Department of transportation,
Federal Highway Administration. The program is a grass-roots collaborative effort
established to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the
United States. Since 1992, the National Scenic Byways Program has funded almost
1,500 projects for state and nationally designated byway routes in 48 states. The U.S.
Secretary of Transportation recognizes certain roads as All-American Roads or National
Scenic Byways based on one or more archeological, cultural, historic, natural,
recreational and scenic qualities.

I phoned Jon Engle, the owner of the small business and spoke extensively about what
he does. His is a very small business, recently gone from part time to full time operated
out of his home at this point (although he is soon expanding). The process is that he
gets whatever sub-structure back in shape and then bonds rubber to the surface and
mills it by hand to match original patterns. This is not cheap, but they can do extensive
patterns on a one-off production for things which will never support a mold being built.
He does not want, or try, to compete with the firms building molded products. For
instance, he gave a quote for a full rebuild of a pair of 1937 Pontiac running boards of
$1,500. This includes rebuilding and refinishing of the metal sub-structure. He claims
that the finished product goal is to approximate what would come out of the box if you
were able to buy a new set from GM. All that said, he can give some savings on lot
jobs. For instance, if you were able to line up other '53 Pontiac owners who wanted
reproduction rubber front mats (he can get colors other than black) he could give a
better quote for the larger job. He pointed out the Nash vent window rubber on his web
page which they took a lot of time to build, but which passed the direct garden hose
spray test. My guess is that we have members with problem pieces for which this might
make sense, especially if they can put together orders for multiple copies of a similar
piece. If someone is interested, they should call his toll free number and talk about
what they want. He is very open about what he does, what it is and what it is not. This
looks like a resource which may be very valuable to some of our members.

Arnold Landvoigt has been using this website to verify the sales prices of early
Pontiacs. He checks the sold cars on ebay and has found that the Manheim Gold Book
has been consistently in line with the prices that people are actually paying for old
Pontiacs, not what the seller thinks they are worth.
The Gold Book was established in 1968 and is the oldest continuously published
authority on collector car values. Gold Book's database of collector car auction results
and verified private transactions is the largest in the world. Its editors and auction
reporters attend or monitor over 100 collector car auctions and private-owner sales
venues in the U.S. and Western Europe each year. The Gold Book staff are members of
numerous collector car clubs that monitor trends in the car-collecting hobby.
